Porto Chairman Boas mourns Costa: Your departure makes us miss you infinitely, my captain

4:54pm, 6 August 2025Football

August 6th Porto general manager Joje Costa died of cardiac arrest at the age of 53. Porto Chairman Boas posted a long article to deeply mourn Joje-Costa.

Andre Vilas Boas's statement:

Joge Costa left us. Our "Beast", the eternal legend of the club.

He is highly respected and loved by all Porto fans. He is a role model in the hearts of countless people, whether as a person, as a professional player, or as an idol.

First, I express my deepest condolences to his family, children and friends in my personal name, and on behalf of the Porto Football Club, the Board of Directors and the club management.

Then, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to all Porto fans and our Blue and White Family.

Joger Costa is one of our most beloved players, a legend whose love for the club and the spirit of Porto is unmatched. He is unique in his life and in his relationship with us. Today we want to tell him that we will always be with you and give back to him with gratitude. He paid too much for the club: blood, sweat and tears.

Heat cannot be simply defined. He represents everything about Porto Football Club. His unwavering belief in winning, his unlimited desire to win, his touching dedication to the club, and his leadership, all became an indelible part of Porto's history, both in domestic and international arenas.

Joger Costa deeply touched each of us for his dedication, whether it was the Porto he had given or the continuous giving to him. He is undoubtedly an important member of our club's long and glorious history, and any book that records the history of the club will remember his name. We will always remember him.

In my personal memory, he also has a special position. He has always been my friend and the source of strength and inspiration for me. He always stood by me. He is a strict friend, and once he notices that someone is discouraged, he will immediately convey a message of encouragement and concentration. Not long ago, he wrote to me, "Andre, I want you to know that I will always fight with you, for our Porto."

He is such a person: to be part of it in person, to boost morale, and to lead us to fight until we see us cheer for victory again.

Many people still remember the pain he suffered when he was forced to play for Charlton, and of course we remember the undisguised joy he had when he returned to his blue and white robe. What after? He won everything.

We have not forgotten that when he succeeded as the head coach, he resolutely decided to interrupt his coaching career because he believed that he could contribute to the club again as a manager. He returned without regrets and devoted himself to his duties as a professional football director. He was still working on Porto's success when he left us: just finished a technical meeting and an interview, talking about the upcoming matches of the new season, as always full of desire to win.

Joger-Costa never gives up. He knew how important he was to us, but he never attributed victory to himself. Victory belongs to Porto. This is true on the court and in eternal life. His spiritual legacy will live forever in the memories of all Porto people.

Jorghe, your departure makes us miss you infinitely, but please believe that we will fight for you just as you have fought for us and Porto.

You will never be forgotten, my captain.

—Andre Vilas Boas
