Ajax fires head coach

9:10pm, 20 May 2025Football

On May 19, the official website of Ajax Amsterdam Football Club confirmed that head coach Francesco Farioli leaves office after the end of the 2024/25 season.

Francesco Farioli helped Ajax regain its momentum.

Leaving the team with Farioli is also his team of assistant coaches, including Danielle Cavaletto, Felipe Sanchez Matteos and Yarco Toomisto. Farioli joins Ajax in the summer of 2024. At that time, the Italian coach signed a three-year contract with the club, valid until June 2027. His mission was to lead Ajax to regain his strength after the team experienced a trough.

The 36-year-old head coach left a deep mark during his coaching session, helping Ajax return to the championship ranks in the Dutch Football League and make his mark in the European arena. He led Ajax to the UEFA Cup round of 16, but eventually lost to Frankfurt and was unfortunately eliminated.

Ajax also lost the championship in the Eredivisie league. They also led the second-ranked PSV Eindhoven by 9 points before the first five rounds of the season. However, the team coached by Farioli fell in the end of the season, eventually putting PSV on the championship.

"My journey in Ajax began nearly a year ago, with the goal of leading Ajax back to its former glory," Farioli said in a statement on the club's official website. "This journey came to an end at the John Cruyff Arena, because I eventually brought Ajax back to the highest stage of European football - the Champions League."

According to ESPN, the increasing tension between Farioli and Ajax's management is the main reason for the resignation of the Italian coach. Farioli has disagreements with technical director Alex Cross on the club's transfer policy, tactical arrangements and financial issues.

In this way, Ajax will have to look for a sixth head coach in the past two years. Before Farioli, Alfred Schroeder, Morris Stein, John Heatinga and John Van Ship all took over the coaching seal of the John Cruyff Arena.
