Barcelona Football Club officially announced that due to controversy with the club on the issue of injury, the team's main goalkeeper and German international Mark Andre Terstegen was temporarily removed from his position as captain. With the joining of new goalkeeper Joan Garcia, Ter Stegen is already facing challenges in the main position of the team. The serious back injury he suffered in training recently has further exacerbated tensions within the club. After undergoing surgery, Ter Stegen publicly stated that he expected to be on standby for three months. However, Barcelona originally hoped that his rest period would reach four months. The reason is that according to the La Liga salary cap rules, if a player is absent for more than four months due to injury, the club can temporarily move his salary out of the total salary calculation in the first half of the season. Barcelona hopes to use this to free up salary space and successfully register new aid Garcia and another important signing for Marcus Rashford this summer.
Telstegen then exercised his legal rights and refused to disclose his detailed medical records to the club. The move was interpreted by Barcelona's senior management as "refusing to assist the club in registering new players", including his direct replacement Garcia, and the club expressed shock.
Although Barcelona may consider legal action, Ter Stegen's position is supported by the Spanish Professional Football League (La Liga) and the Spanish Players' Union (AFE). After meeting with coach Hansey Flick on Thursday, the club's senior executives finally made the decision to temporarily deprive the captain Terstegan of his armband.
Barcelona said in an official statement: "The Barcelona Football Club announced that in view of the initiation of the disciplinary investigation process for player Mark Andre Terstegen, the club decided to temporarily remove its first team captain before the final resolution of the incident. During this period, the captain's duties will be performed by the current second captain Ronald Araujo." The issue of staying and leaving the captain's position has become extremely sensitive because several important players in the team, including Frankie De Jong, Ferran Torres and Garvey, have publicly expressed their support for the German goalkeeper.
