There are rumors that the Houston Rockets are considering revising the contract for point guard Fred VanVleet. The offseason began early after the Houston Rockets were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in seven playoff games. With the current uncertain outlook, there are rumors that management is discussing how to deal with Fred VanVleet’s contract.
31-year-old VanVleet's contract includes a $44.9 million team option. According to NBA insiders Mark Stan and Jack Fischer, there are reports that the Rockets are considering accepting or rejecting the option, but are currently discussing a final decision to be made by the end of June.
"The Rockets are discussing postponing the decision date for Fred VanVleet's player options until the end of June. Under the initial terms, Houston must make a decision this week on VanVleet's 2025-26 team options."
Houston initially signed a three-year contract with VanVleet in 2023, worth more than $128 million. The first two years were team contracts, but the third year was the option that the Rockets could choose to accept or reject.
VanVleet has been the veteran leader of the young Rockets for the past two seasons. At the end of the 2024-25 season, he averaged 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game, shooting 3.78% from the field and 34.5% from three-pointers.
The Rockets may be looking for a superstar player in the trading market, and Kevin Durant is a hot pick. The Houston Rockets have secured multiple draft picks, and management is believed to plan to use some of them as trade chips to enhance next season's roster.
Despite being one of the youngest teams in the league, the Rockets have managed to lock in second place in the West. However, due to lack of playoff experience, the team seemed to be beaten by the Warriors in the first round. However, despite the series being 1-3 behind, the Houston Rockets successfully counterattacked and dragged the game into Game 7.
