Robinson refuses the right to choose a contract with the Heat

Robinson can return to the Heat and agree to be part of another player’s signing and deal, or signing with a new team.

chose an unrestricted free agent Sunday, exercising his early termination option in the last year of his contract with the Miami Heat.

This decision does not mean that he cannot return to the Heat. Robinson — the player with the highest 3-point shooting percentage in team history — could have let his option pass on Sunday and then secured $9.9 million, with a contract next season close to $20 million.

He can now negotiate a new contract with the Heat, agree to be part of another player's signing and deal, or simply signing with a new club. NBA free agents officially begin Monday night; Robinson must decide on his sack option by Sunday.

31-year-old Robinson is a success story in the NBA that few people can do. He started his college career at Class III Williams, then played all the way to Michigan, lost and was given a chance by the Heat.

Since then, Robinson has become a key part of the rotation. He played 15 games as a rookie and then, over the next three seasons, he was basically a full-time starter – in those years, he scored at least 232 3-pointers a year.

His 1,202 3-pointers is the most in team history and he needs fewer games than any player in NBA history to reach multiple 3-point milestones – including 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1,000 3-pointers.

Robinson averaged 11.3 points per game in his seven NBA seasons and shot 39.7% from three-pointers.
