Giddy and the Bulls renew their contract deadlock, Thunder may become the key to winning the championship

12:47am, 17 July 2025Basketball

On July 15, half a month has passed since the opening of the free market, and Josh Gidey and the Bulls have not yet reached an agreement on renewal negotiations. Although he is currently training in Las Vegas, he has not appeared on the sidelines in the summer league, and his absence is considered dissatisfaction with the Bulls management. In contrast, other Bulls players actively come to watch the game. The root of the contradiction between Giddy and the Bulls is that the contract renewal amount has not been reached. Gidey hopes to sign a contract similar to Sargers, with an average annual salary of more than $30 million. However, after the free market opened, the Bulls only provided Gidey with a one-year qualification offer of $11.1 million.

It should be noted here that the ambition quote does not actually represent a formal renewal offer. After the parent team submits a qualification offer, the player will become a restricted free agent, and the team reserves the right to match the quotes of other teams. If he wishes to leave his parent team completely, he can first accept the qualification offer and become a full free agent the following summer.

For example, the Warriors offered a $7.9 million qualification offer to Cuminga this summer, and if no other teams made a formal offer in the future, he would likely accept the offer and leave next year. Similarly, in 2022, the Sun locked in Ayton with a qualification offer of $16.4 million, and then the Pacers proposed a four-year, $133 million contract, and the Sun finally chose to match.

For Giddy and Kumingga, they both hope to receive a five-year, $150 million contract extension, but both teams decisively refused. Last season, Gidey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals in 70 regular season games, with shooting percentages of 46.5%, 37.8% and 78.1% respectively in the three shooting percentages. His scoring and stealing performance was the second highest in his career, while rebounds and assists were the best. Especially after the All-Star Game, his average data increased to 21+10+9, and he achieved 7 triple-doubles, ranking seventh in the league. Born on October 10, 2002, he still has huge growth potential.

Looking to the future, the Thunder predicted that Giddy was interested in winning a big contract but could not meet its needs. They decided to send the young player who had been trained for three years to the Bulls through a 1-for-1 deal to exchange for Caruso in 2024. This year, Caruso's joining is very likely to become an important factor in the Thunder's competition for the championship.

Based on Giddy's extraordinary performance this season, what kind of contract do you think he is worthy of?
