Portuguese national football player Diogo Jota (Liverpool) fell asleep peacefully in the tears of his family and teammates.
BBC BBC reported on the 6th that "the funeral of Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Jota was held in a church in Gondomar, Portugal, his hometown."
Jota was traveling with his younger brother on the 3rd and died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain. Born in 1996 and under the age of 30, the young football star Jota is a versatile player who can do multiple positions. He has played for Atletico Madrid (Spain) and Wolves (England), and joined Liverpool (England) in 2020. Jota
made 182 appearances in Liverpool and scored 65 goals in five seasons. He has contributed to Liverpool's Premier League (EPL) championship in the 2024-2025 season and has been widely loved. Liverpool retired Jota's No. 20 jersey to express his nostalgia for Jota.
Many Liverpool players attended the funeral of the day. At the beginning of the funeral, Liverpool players, including head coach Anne Slott and "Captain" Virgil Van Dijk, entered the church, holding wreaths shaped like two brothers' red jerseys, with their names and numbers printed on them. Jota's motherland, Portugal, also finds it difficult to accept Jota's farewell. In a Portuguese uniform, Jota scored 14 goals in 49 Class A games. Jota's last official match was the European National League final, with Portugal winning the championship. Bruno Fernandez (Manchester United), Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves (all played for Alchal), Joao Felix (Chelsea) and Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), who won the trophy with Joata, all attended the funeral to condolences to Joata's family.
Liverpool's home court Anfield Stadium was crowded with fans, who paid tribute to Jota. Everyone paid tribute to the Jota brothers before Real Madrid's match against Dortmund (Germany) in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals.
However, Portugal's national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend.
Portuguese media reported that Ronaldo failed to attend the funeral with numerous audiences, probably because he suffered great trauma when his father died in 2005. Ronaldo's sister Catia Avelo explained: "When my father passed away, I was not only defeated by the huge sense of loss, but the curious eyes that people cast made it difficult for me to maintain minimum dignity wherever I went. In the chaos, I could not even maintain minimum dignity." It is said that Ronaldo will choose to pay tribute to Jota silently instead of attending the funeral. After the news of the
Jota's accident was first exposed, Ronaldo paid tribute to him on social media and wrote: "Rest in peace, my friend." Locals believe that Ronaldo's move was because he was worried that he would attract too much attention when attending Jota's funeral.
