Not the G League! Lin Wei may log in to the NCAA next stop, and he will become the top defender in Asia

6:30pm, 4 September 2025Basketball

This summer, Lin Wei passed the G League international player draft and was eventually selected by the Mavericks' affiliated team Texas Legend. However, because there is no guarantee of salary, and Asian players play in the G League, if their abilities are not particularly outstanding, it will be difficult to get the NBA summoned. So Lin Wei's agent team did not let him play in the G League, but chose the NCAA.

Recently, Lin Wei's agency's social media has followed the University of Oregon men's basketball team. Considering the NIL policy introduced by the NCAA in the past two years, Lin Wei is indeed likely to go to the NCAA to play next. Although there is basically no hope to enter the NBA through the NCAA path, if you can really experience it in the NCAA, it will definitely be beneficial to Lin Wei himself and the future of the Chinese men's basketball team.

Lin Wei, now 22 years old, is actually quite young. Considering that the NCAA is no longer as it used to focus on cultivating young players, but has begun to tend to be professional and pay players (NIL policy), he basically doesn't care about age anymore, so it is understandable that Lin Wei chooses this path.

The reason why many rookies withdraw early in this year's NBA draft is that they have a richer salary in the NCAA. If they really participate in the draft, the salary of the second round pick is not guaranteed. If they fail to choose, their future prospects will be even darker. Therefore, while they can get more salary in college, the current NCAA is the choice of many European youth training players.

However, the University of Oregon where Lin Wei may join can be said to be a prestigious NCAA school and is also a regular at the Crazy Three. For example, Joseph Young, who once played for Tongxi, Boll Pole, Prichard, Duarte, Jordan Bell, Aaron Brooks, and Dillon Brooks, who now play for the Suns, are all from the University of Oregon. As an Asian defender, Lin Wei has to go to this completely unfamiliar environment, not only to overcome language and life difficulties, but also to make the worst plan that he may not have too many ball rights.

In short, going to the NCAA is definitely better than the G League, and the income is much higher than that of the G League. If you really make a name for yourself, it may even be better than earning in the CBA. In addition, compared with the G League, the NCAA's tactical execution requirements are also higher, unlike in the G League, where you encounter some "lone wolf" who does not pass the ball.

Wang Junjie has previously proved that his rotation level of mid-to-top teams in the NCAA is already the striker of the first Asian team, so as long as Lin Wei can gain a foothold in Oregon, his level can basically crush the Asian defender. But as mentioned earlier, as an Asian defender, Lin Wei has a great difficulty in breaking out on the other side of the ocean where there is no shortage of defenders, and it depends on whether he can overcome such difficulties and obstacles.
