New recruits + veterans! Lineup disassembly! How many possibilities are there for the new Spurs?

4:32pm, 14 September 2025Basketball

Spurs fans have been somewhat distressed in the past few seasons. The team has been playing badly, trial and error in the rebuilding vortex, and the core lineup is always difficult to take shape. The team's lack of talent reserves and frequent injury problems have led to the gradual marginalization of this former dynasty team in the West.

But this summer, the situation is finally different.

The framework of the Spurs lineup has gradually become clear: Wenban Yama, the pride of heaven, played the prototype of a future superstar in his rookie season. The All-Star guard Fox introduced by the trade allowed the team to have a dual-core team overnight. In addition to the veteran and rotation depth, the new coach Mickey Johnson finally had enough cards to play.

Unlike the Spurs who play and watch in the past few years, the diversity of the lineups in the new season is likely to become their biggest advantage. Here are some of the lineup plans in the Spurs:

Regular starting: Fox + Castle + Vassel + Barnes + Vassel + Vassel + Vassel

Three young core members: Fox, Castle, Vassel, are the team's offensive and defensive cores; Vassel and Barnes are responsible for opening up space on the outside.

The three-point shooting percentage of Wenban last season reached 35%. If this level can be maintained stably and if Fox can recover to the 35% three-point level before injury, the offensive power of this lineup is worth looking forward to.

The challenge on the defensive end lies in the front line. The team lacks the forward rotation that can not only fight against large wings but also ensure offensive threats. Fortunately, the Wenban's fill-up and defensive coverage can make up for many shortcomings.

, and Wassel is another key point. He has undertaken many ball-holding tasks in the team in the past few years, but in this lineup, his position will basically slide to the fourth offensive point, which is more suitable for participating in off-ball offense and taking advantage of cover. If he can accept and adapt to this new positioning, he can be an indispensable part of the Spurs' future puzzle.

Two Towers Lineup: Connet + Vinban Yama

The Spurs signed inside Connet in the offseason. Judging from the lineup, they can try the "Connet + Vinban" double tower lineup in the new season.

In this lineup, Cornett is most likely to replace Castle, and then retain the rosters of Wassel and Barnes to maintain basic offensive space. In this way, the value of rebounds and frame protection is guaranteed, with Cornett responsible for the traditional center, while Wenban participates in the defense as a defensive sweep. The problem with this lineup may be on the offensive end. The Spurs have tried the double-large lineup of "Wenban + Suohan" in the past, but the overall offensive effect is not good and there is insufficient threat from the outside. Cornett can participate in pick-and-rolls, eat cakes, and occasionally has certain passing abilities, but the outside line is almost no threat.

But referring to his two-tower partnership with Horford during the Celtics, it is at least not a completely unworkable solution, but the coach needs to think more about tactical design.

Three-back lineup: Fox + Castle + Harper

In this year's draft, the Spurs took Dylan Harper, so a question was also put on the table: Can the three-back combination of Fox + Castle + Harper be compatible?

From the perspective of attributes, all three are large defenders, with average shooting and more relying on playing with the ball. On the surface, the role overlaps seriously. But referring to the Thunder and Pacers in recent years, these cases are enough to show that when the team has enough defenders who can control the ball and pass the ball, this is the biggest advantage.

Suppose this lineup can be matched with Barnes and Vinban Yama, five people can attack the basket and pass the ball, and have extremely strong offensive creativity. The defensive end also has potential. Fox and Harper can oppress opponents' ball holders on the back line, while Castle uses his arm span to destroy the pass route, and Wenban mainly sits at the basket. The real variable of this lineup lies in Dylan Harper. He has hardly played off the ball in college and now he has to learn to catch shots and cut empty. If the three-pointers are stable, he will become a backcourt puzzle with excellent offense and defense; but if he still insists on holding the ball in large quantities, the rhythm may be disrupted.

Five-Shotsman Lineup: Vassel + Champany + Barnes + Olynik + Vinbanyama

This link should be the most surprising thing. The Spurs can finally set up a five-Shotsman lineup in the new season. In this lineup, the five-point shooting percentages last season were 36.8%, 37%, 43.3%, 41.8%, and 35.2%, respectively, and everyone has qualified outside threats.

On the offensive end, the space on the court can be completely opened up, and Wenban's internal and external value is fully utilized; in comparison, the defensive end may be relatively fragile, Vassel and Olynick are not considered strong points in defense, Champany and Barnes need to do their best to participate in the assisted defense, while Wenban is responsible for the support, which may be a shortcoming point.

Therefore, this lineup is likely to not be used for a long time, but it can be used for a short period of time when the offense is stagnant.

Young core lineup: Fox + Castle + Harper + Wassel + Carter + Sohan + Wenban

What truly represents the future of the Spurs is this young core lineup. The above group of people cover almost all the hopes of the team's future. One attempt is: Fox + Castle + Harper + Carter + Wenban, while another more traditional option is: Fox + Castle + Carter + Sohan + Wenban.

The former has stronger offense, while the latter has more stable defense.

In these two lineups, Carter Bryant was the focus of observation. The 19-year-old rookie shot 37.1% from three-pointers in college and also showed defensive potential during the summer league. If he can take into account both projection and defense in the rookie season, he will naturally have the opportunity to become an important puzzle for the Spurs in the future; on the contrary, his and Sohan's roles are likely to overlap in part..

At the same time, Sohan has also come to a critical year for renewal. If the three-pointer is still unstable, he is likely to continue to be a shortcut by his opponent, but if he can continue to improve from a 30% shooting percentage, then the team's offense will have a chance to take it to the next level.

For the Spurs in the new season, they no longer only rely on the single-core team of Wenban Yama. The team's lineup has become diverse, and all of this will depend on the growth rate of young players.

For this former dynasty team, the real moment of revival may be quietly kicking off.
